Shelters?

The shelters here are requesting you only bring neccessary items. What do you deem neccessary? I, myself, would choose things that CANNOT be replaced over items like blankets, clothes, computer, etc. I would choose my pictures and cds of pictures, birth certificates, and ss cards. No, those won't help me live through a disaster. But those are the things that CANNOT be replaced...ok as far as pictures go. Birth certificates, SS cards, and stuff like that CAN be replaced, with a hassle. But pictures, and heirlooms, how can you replace those?

I guess we all view things differently. Photos, I don't have a lot of anyway, most of mine are online somewhere, and you can always take more pictures. I had to leave all my pictures of Aaron as a baby behind when I left my ex husband, so I never really got excited about pictures again.

Heirlooms, the only things I have that hold any value to me is my grandma's buffet and table. Can't exactly haul that to a shelter, so they would be gone forever.

Important documents, I would definitely take with me, and I'd bring my laptop and try to figure out a way to bring my desktop tower.

Mostly, I would bring stuff that would make my kids and animals more comfortable- you can bring your animals, right? Because that would be something that would definitely have to come with me, my pets.

Sadly, most shelters don't take pets. You have to call around and find out which ones do.
